Roundhand

Hold a key, speak, and the text lands where you were typing. On-device transcription — audio never leaves your Mac.

Requires an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Intel Macs are not supported.

Installing

Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Roundhand to Applications.
Launch it. Roundhand asks for Microphone and Accessibility permission — it needs both to hear you and to insert text.
On first run it downloads the speech model (about 470 MB), once.

Updates

On its second launch Roundhand asks whether it may check for updates automatically. If you say yes, it checks about once a day and shows you what changed before installing anything — nothing is installed silently.

You can always check by hand from the menu-bar icon, or Settings → General → Check for Updates.

Privacy

Audio is transcribed on your Mac and is never uploaded or written to disk.
No telemetry and no accounts.
Optional cleanup through an LLM runs only with your own API key, and only on the transcript text.
